WESTEM – EU-projekt: Unga kvinnors rätt till högre utbildning

KC Kompetenscenter koordinator i Erasmus+ projekt

I projektet deltar  5 olika länder i EU.

KC Kompetenscenter

WESTEM Project
 –

“Women’s empowerment through sustainability pathways in STEM Higher Education” is an Erasmus+ Key Action KA2 Program, financed by the European Commission, launched on January 27, 2022, during the kickoff meeting which was held virtually.

The two-year project will involve a diverse consortium of academics, researchers, NGOs and a SME from five countries of the European Union: KC Kompetenscenter Idéburen sektor – Sweden, which serves as the coordinating organisation, Panepistimio Thessalias, University of Thessaly – Greece, S-Nodi – Italy, Synthesis Center for Research and Education ltd. – Cyprus and Brainplus – Austria.

This project aims to increase the levels of achievement and interest of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Whereas 52% of the European population are women, only 30% of these are entrepreneurs and 32% economic leaders, while women represent only 28% of the workforce in STEM sectors. The gender gaps are particularly high in some of the fastest-growing and highest-paid jobs of the future, like computer science and engineering.

Studies have shown that young girls refrain from taking up an education in STEM fields, because of reasons like lack of inspiration and role models. Girls consistently demonstrate a high aptitude for both math and science, however, more than 10 years of research has shown that girls’ interest in math and science is often implicitly or explicitly discouraged. The percentage of girls who say they like science, drops from 66% to 48% between 4th and 12th grades. Withal, there are very few female STEM role models, especially in popular culture and mass media – situation which reinforces the belief that girls can’t, or shouldn’t succeed in math and science.

There are two target groups in the project: girls and women who study/will pursue studies in STEM, and HEIs faculty – academic and administrative staff who engage with students.

The project’s objectives are:

– Enable opportunities to girls and women to gain the skills and confidence to succeed in STEM;

– Develop a self-assessment tool for assessing HEIs faculty readiness in promoting participation of women in STEM fields of study;

– Develop and apply suitable professional development and training to faculty to promote inclusive STEM education and support for women coming from marginalized backgrounds;

– Attract, recruit and retain women into STEM majors and fields in colleges and universities through dedicated role model mentoring scheme.
